Saint Brenda

July 30, 2004 | 4 Comments

“I don’t understand how you can say such ugly things about us without even knowing us,” Brenda McCormick complained in my comments section after I trashed her charity, Mothers Inc., as a religious scam. She was right, and ultimately I declared her a saint for her tireless work on behalf of the poor and the homeless in her community.

I’m glad I did, because last Saturday Brenda did what the religious invariably demand of their saints before the title is bestowed.

She died.

Will there be a cartoon of Brenda standing at the gates of heaven with a sign sticking out of the ground (cloud) saying “No Zoning Laws Here”?

You get people like her, who think that distributing food and clothes makes them above the law. Which puts her right on par with most other religious organizations, actually. Of course, I can hardly claim that the godly are the only ones afflicted with such silliness when it comes to the rules; just about anyone with an excess of money, or an elected office, have the same privilege.

Don’t get me wrong, charities are good, but godly or not, they need to follow the rules. And that means, don’t go into business in a residential zone. It’s not as if the zoning commission was trying to change the area from commercial to residential, after all.

And yes, I’ve had experience with both the zoning commission, and eminent domain. They’re annoying, but they perform necessary tasks.

Does this mean that you’ll get into heaven?

Kevin, she wasn’t running buisness from her fron lawn. She was running charity.
